Nominated as the best Uniformed Group cadet in The Girls' Brigade by the school's Student Advisory Committee for demonstrating exemplary performance in my CCA
I was a member of The Girls' Brigade (79th Coy) when I was a student of Riverside Secondary School from 2014 - 2017.
In 2015, I was appointed as a member of the Executive Committee (Squad Leader).
In 2016, I was voted to become the Chairperson and was also nominated to win the award of the Best Uniformed Group (UG) Cadet Award in The Girls' Brigade.
In 2017, I graduated with the promotion to the role of a Staff Sergeant (one of the highest ranks in The Girls Brigade).
What I did:
- Planned the CCA timetable with my Vice Chairperson for weekly sessions
- Worked with the Executive Committee to plan and execute major CCA events (e.g. annual bonding camp, combined UG camp, farewell party, National Day Parade)
- Organised outdoor heritage field trips to Fort Canning Park and Botanic Gardens
- Conducted the school's morning assembly monthly for the year 2016
- Delivered several speeches to the student population
- Attended a Basic First Aid course
What I learnt:
- Leadership and decision making skills (i.e. decisiveness, doing what is best for the team)
- Event planning and organisation
- Time management (juggling between academics and CCA events)
- Effective communication and active listening (valuing and respecting others' views and perspectives)
- Responsibility and accountability
- Teamwork and collaboration (building good relationships with other members)
- Confidence in public speaking
- Basic First Aid skills (i.e. CPR, types of bandaging for different wounds)
