PCF Sports Day and Carnival (May, 2017)
I was a student volunteer games coordinator for one of the games in the PCF Sports Day and Carnival organised for children attending PCF preschools in Woodlands.

My roles:
- Setting up / tearing down the game venue
- Crowd management and facilitating children and their families in participating in the game

I was able to observe the innovative use of resources and the types of games / activities which interest children the most. I also learnt that giving children words of encouragement motivated them to participate in the game, even those who were reluctant initially. This experience sparked my creativity and the knowledge I gained deemed helpful when I was coming up with fun and interactive learning experiences, and engaging children in activities during my practicums.

R3 Day (January 2014 - December 2017)
Annually, my secondary school would organise a recycling event in the community called R3 Day. It aims to raise awareness of the 3Rs- reduce, reuse and recycle in the Woodlands community.

My roles:
- Distributed pamphlets to households in neighbourhoods in Woodlands 1 week prior to the event
- Interacted with members of various households to notify them about our event and cause
- Went around the neighbourhood to collect recyclable items (i.e. newspapers, clothing, toys) from designated blocks on the event day, which were then sent over to recycling trucks to be recycled

Over the years, I gradually mustered up the courage to become a confident speaker to members of the public. I learnt how to communicate with people of all ages with respect and honesty, even if they were unkind or turned me away. Undoubtedly, I also gained knowledge on the importance of recycling and how I can do my part to help the environment.
To this date, I collect newpapers, magazines and plastic bottles etc. in my household and throw these recyclables in the recycling bin located near the rubbish chute to aid recycling efforts.

Singapore Christian Home (July 2016 - October 2016)
With members of my Co-Curricular Activity (CCA)- The Girls' Brigade, I volunteered at the Singapore Christian Home weekly and interacted with around 30 elderly there.

My roles:
- Led the CCA of approximately 50 girls to work together and delegated teams to plan for games, song and dance to be performed every week
- Coordinated the activities and logistics and ensured for a smooth running at every session with members of the executive committee

During my first few visits, some elderly were not responsive towards me. However, I continued trying my hardest to interact and carry out the activities with them every week. On my final visit, majority of the elderly were willing to participate in the activities.
This experience honed my Chinese speaking skills, especially since majority of the elderly only speak in the Chinese language. I stepped up as a courageous leader and improved on my leadership and team management skills as I learnt to build on others' expertise to work better together.
