Bulletin board

I was in-charge of designing the bulletin board for a mock family resource centre my team needed to set up for the module: Family & Community Partnership.
Touching on my knowledge of Epstein’s model for Parental Involvement, I put up appropriate newspaper articles, pamplets (e.g. parenting advice, nutritional menus) and community resources (e.g. financial schemes, tips on caring for a child with learning difficulties) which provide information and support to diverse types of families in Singapore.

I learnt about the different types of families present in Singapore, the challenges they face and community resources that can help them. I also learnt about the importance of family in a child's holistic development and how I, as an educator, can collaborate and involve them in their children's learning at home or in school.
Build-A-Story! / Match Me!

Drawing on my skills in bilingualism and knowledge gained in the module: Teaching Literacy to Diverse Learners, I revised 2 resources (speaking and reading skills) from current preschool educators to better cater to the needs and abilities of 4-5 years old English Language Learners (ELLs) to support their literacy development.

I learnt about the diversity of ELLs in Singapore (i.e. characteristics, common challenges faced in a typical preschool) and ways I can modify and adapt resources to suit their interests.

Sensory cube

I put together knowledge learnt in the module: Effective Learning Environment for Young Children and made this resource for infants aged 6-12 months old to manipulate and explore the elements of the sensory cube; which consists of vivid colours, patterns, textures and sounds to stimulate their sense of sight, touch, and sound.
I used soft materials (sponge, felt, pompom balls, ribbons etc.), and secured everything by sewing or with non-toxic glue, making it safe for infants’ exploration.

I honed my creativity and innovation to make infant safe resources and how I can use a variety of art supplies to it make visually aesthetic for infants.
Lightbox

This is a role-play video of how I, as an educator, would introduce the Lightbox I made to a class of K2 children (5-6 years old) to use in the Discovery learning corner of the classroom.

I made the Lightbox according to the area of exploration: Inventions and Technology under the NEL framework to introduce ‘Light and Shadows’ to children. I designed this resource to let children nurture their sense of wonder and curiousity through experimentation using the torchlight and lightbox.

I learnt how to create meaningful and engaging resources using recycled materials and ways to encourage children's exploration and learning independently.

Phonics Wall Chart

With my knowledge of Language and Literacy, I created an interactive zoo-themed phonics wall chart to be put at the Language and Literacy corner of a N2 classroom (3-4 years old children).

The objective of this learning resource is for children to recognise beginning letter sounds of ‘m’, ‘l’, ‘t’ and ‘s’ and identify words that have the same beginning sounds.

Through this project, I gained better understanding of designing developmentally appropriate resources to aid the language development of young children. This project also sparked my interest in learning more about the English Language for children, which led me to choose my elective module: Teaching Literacy to Diverse Learners in Year 3. Teaching the English Language well is my goal.

Threading activity

This is an individual fine motor activity I made for the module: Motor Skills Development for toddlers aged 12-18 months old.
This resource aims to let children practice threading and improve their pincer grip by putting straws through a piece of ribbon.
The straws are I chose are colourful to engage children and have various lengths and diameters so they can choose from a variety. The cut ends of the straws are wrapped with a layer of masking tape to protect children from accidental cuts on their hands.

I gained knowledge of toddlers' motor skills developmental milestones and learnt techniques to make resources to support their development at different ages; while ensuring that the materials are safe for toddlers at the same time.
